Charity

Because of the Year Zero ( Khmer Rouge regime between 1975 to 1979) and long-running war, many people died, infrastructure has been destroyed. Living in peace for only 12 years, many Cambodian people really need healt care, education and employment.
Of course, Cambodian Ministry of Health has been working hard to provide better and better health care to more and more people. Many countries such as USA, Belgum, France, Switzeland ... also help Cambodia on health issues. But because of poverty and low education, health care is still one of the top priorities of the government. Providing clean drinking water is really important to prevent people from getting virus infection.
What wrong with drinking water here?
Normally, people dig well to get water from under ground. They don't have money to buy concrete pipes to keep water clean. As you see this photo, a well is just a 5- meter-deep pit.

A bamboo pole with a hook at one side is used with a plastic bucket to collect water from the well. It is heavy for children and may fall down into the well eventually. Commonly, water spills from bucket on people's feet and flows into the well. After raining, well water turns to be muddy and commonly we see some frogs and toads swimming happily in there.  It is worst if a frog or toad dies in the well. People know when water is already smelly, but they don't have choice, have to use until water turns back to normality.

Furthermore, water may obtain some dangerous elements like arsenic and iron. The photo below shows a man who uses arsenic water.

Our objectives:
Our team works on water issue. We try to help people not just to have cleaner drinking water, but possibly have water for gardening as well.  We make sure that the wells are constructed in  high quality, will be in use for at least 30 years.
Who and where are the people who need our help?
There are many people in different places who need our help, but I chose only 2 places: one is in Kok Thlok Leu Commune, Chikreng district,70km away from Siem Reap town. Another one is in Nokor Krao village, just 5km north of Angkor Wat. I and driver Sary used to live there during Khmer Rouge regime and the civil war, we know people and the places there very well.
How to choose location/families to construct the wells at?
At first we have to find out how many families, at least 3, who need a well together. The location/land where the well will be constructed must belong to a nice family. We need that family to maintain, clean and share the well with other families. I and driver Sary normally provide technique to construct and help to fix the pump when broken.
How to construct?
It is very important to check for the location first to make sure that the well will have water, otherwise we will loose money to dig. We normally consider about 2 options:
1-If we expect 60 to 70% that our well will have water, we will construct a new one. How to construct is to dig the ground, put concrete pipes in (1m in diameter), cover it, put a hand pump on ground level and make concrete floor around for bathing.

2- If we do not expect to get water for the well, we have to find an existing one (a pit well) that can provide water all the year around. The way to construct is similar to the new one above, but we have to use special kind of dirt to fill up the outer part of the pit and for the base of the concrete floor to prevent from sinking

The best season to construct is in summer (February, March and April) when water table is low, we can dig  deeper.
The cost:

A well costs between US$400 to $600. The difference is because of the location and individual well. It costs up to $600 to construct a well in Kok Thlok Leu (70km away), because of road condition is bad causing  materials for contruction and labor work more expensive. In Nokor Krao village (10km away from Siem Reap town) it costs only $400 to construct a well because everything is much cheaper. The village is nearby Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom, it just takes only one or 2 hours to visit the wells.

What special with our wells?
Compare to other wells, ours are constructed in higher quality with some specialities:

  1.  We make sure that water is safe enough to drink: at least 5 meters deep, no sewage nearby, no rust element and beeing covered to protect from getting muddy when raining.
  2. Used by many families, at least 3, not just for drinking but also for gardening.
  3. With the pump, small children can get water for themselves, parents don't worry if their kids fall down into the well any more.
  4. Last much longer, approximately 30 years. We need to maintain the pump only.

Donation we have got:
So far, we have got some donation from Japanese, Swedish community in Singapore and also from children of Lock Road kindergarten in Singapore as well.

Well #1 donated by Swedish ladies in Singapore. Constructed in February 2009, in Nokor Krao village, 10km away from Siem Reap town.

Wel #2 donated by Swedish families: Oscarsson, Rastock and Johansson. It was constructed in April 2009 in Tapia village, Kok Thlok Leu commune, Chikreng district, Siem Reap province, 70km away from provincial town center.

Well #3 also donated by Swedish ladies in Singapore. Constructed in February 2009, in Nokor Krao village, 10km away from Siem Reap town.

Donated by a Japanese monk to a Buddhist temple in Kok Thlok Leu, 70km away from Siem Reap town. It was constructed in March 2008.
